How to choose a mattress topper

A mattress topper changes how the top few inches of your bed feel. It is a simple way to soften a mattress that feels too firm, or to add a plush layer to a bed that is still supportive but a little tired. These are the points that matter most when you choose one.

Thickness

Toppers usually run from about 1 to 4 inches. A thin topper is a small tweak, while a 4 inch topper gives a clearly softer, sink in surface. If your mattress feels hard under your shoulders and hips, more thickness tends to help. Our guide to the 4 inch mattress topper explains who that height suits and who should go thinner.

Fill type

Fiber filled toppers feel fluffy and soft, similar to a pillow top, and many can be washed at home. Memory foam contours more closely but can hold heat and feels slower to move on. If you sleep warm or change position often, a microfiber fill is usually the more comfortable choice.

Fit and staying in place

Check your mattress size and depth, then add the topper height to find the right fitted sheet. Elastic corner straps keep the topper from sliding, and a deep pocket sheet pulled over both layers holds everything flat.

Topper or new mattress?

A topper works best on a mattress that is still flat and supportive. It will not fix deep dips or a sagging core, because soft fill follows the shape underneath. Our article on mattress topper vs new mattress has a few quick checks you can do tonight.

Care

Shake and fluff your topper every week or two to keep the fill even. Use a mattress protector on top to keep it clean, and follow the care label when you wash it. Always let it dry completely before putting it back on the bed. For step by step help, see how to wash a mattress topper.
